Produced by its own Gigafactory in Nevada, Tesla uses its proprietary lithium-ion battery cells called “2170” cells. Tesla’s Gigafactory in Nevada is one of the largest battery manufacturing facilities in the world. The 2170 cells are assembled into battery packs and installed into Tesla’s electric vehicles. At the time of this article’s publication, All Tesla’s EVs are powered by four kinds of batteries and they are 2170-type, 4680-type, 18650-type, and prismatic-type Tesla batteries. The first EV from Tesla, Tesla Roadster was powered by the 18650-type (recently called 1865) cylindrical batteries. One of the interesting facts about this battery is that it was designed for general purposes but somehow got adapted to EVs.

1. EV Models Using the 2170-Type Tesla Battery

Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y are using 2170-type batteries. 2170 type batter is considered one of the most powerful batteries used by Tesla right now.

• 70 mm in length and 21 mm in diameter
• 68 grams

 

2. EV Models Using the 4680-Type Tesla Battery

The 4680-type battery dimension:

• 80 mm in length and a diameter of 46 mm
• Weight unknown

Still, not any EVs from Tesla are powered by this battery but in October of 2020, Elon Musk announced that all future Model Ys manufactured at Tesla‘s new Texas plant will be run by 4680-type battery cells.

3. Ev Models Using the 18650-Type Tesla Battery

Roadster, Model S, and Model X is using the 18650-type Tesla battery till now.

18650-type battery dimension:

• 65mm in length and 18mm in diameter.
• 47 grams weight
• The nominal voltage of 3.7V,
• 18650-types can store up to 3500 mAh.

Model 3 and Model Ys are planned to use a Prismatic-type Tesla battery.

18650 type battery is supplied by Panasonic along with the 2170 battery type while the 4680 type battery is produced by Tesla’s own Gigafactory. Prismatc type battery is supplied by CATL
